Backlash will not only ruin your chances of catching fish, but also make your day on the water a lot more difficult than it needs to be.

Luckily, an anti-backlash reel can save you a lot of stress.

A good anti-backlash reel will prevent backlashes and tangles with superb braking systems and all the features you need to avoid an embarrassing moment on the water.

What’s a backlash, you might ask? If you’re asking, you are probably one of the few people lucky enough to never experience one of these annoying occurrences.

A backlash is essentially a knot that forms in your fishing line when it gets tangled around the spool. Usually, this occurs when the spool is turning faster than the line.

Here’s what to look when choosing the best anti-backlash reels.

How to Find a Great Anti-Backlash Reel

Line Capacity

Check the line capacity of your reel. The line capacity is ultimately up to you, but if you plan on casting long distances, you’ll want to choose a reel with a huge line capacity.

If you only have shorter casting distances in mind, a lower line capacity should suit your needs just fine.

Gear Ratio

The gear ratio of your anti-backlash reel matters, too. The ideal gear ratio for you will vary depending on what kind of fish you’re going after.

If it’s a smaller fish you’re targeting, a slow gear ratio will work just fine (something around 5.8:1 or lower). If it’s a bigger fish, you’ll want a faster ratio (think 7.3:1 or above).

Closely examine the materials out of which your anti-backlash reel is constructed.

If you want it to hold up well in the long term, you’re going to need to choose a reel made out of durable materials, like high-modulus graphite.

Reels made out of other metals can also work well, but you’ll be sacrificing a bit on the weight – these tend to be a lot heavier.

Drag System

The drag system of your anti-backlash reel is also essential, as it is with any kind of reel you buy.

A carbon-fiber drag system will be best. Not only is it durable and strong, but it will offer all the power you need to reel in big fish.

The drag will control the point at which your line can break as well as how much pressure is on your spool.

In most cases, you’ll be able to adjust the drag with the knobs positioned close to the reel handle.

If you decide not to go with carbon fiber, two other good options include ceramic and graphite.

Pay close attention to the bearings on your reel. The more bearings a reel has, the smoother it will function, particularly when it comes to casting.

Look for bearings made out of durable stainless steel, ideally those that also have anti-corrosion features. You’ll also want one with good roller bearings and reverse bearings, too.

The reel size can impact its weight and portability. You’ll find anti-backlash reels in all kinds of sizes, from 100 to 400 for low profile reels and 4000 to 7000 when you’re looking at round reels.

Ease of Use

You should also examine the handle, grip, and frame of your reel. This isn’t all about cosmetics but can instead also influence the comfort and functionality of the reel.

A reel with a frame made out of graphite or aluminum alloy will be lightweight and easy to use.

When it comes to the grip and the handle, look for a reel that feels comfortable in your hand and won’t slide around too much in wet weather.

You will want to avoid reel handles that are wrapped, as these tend to be less comfortable to use.

Handles made out of soft-touch rubber or EVA foam will be much more comfortable for you to use in inclement weather and they also tend to last a bit longer.

Essentially, there are two types of reels you can choose from when it comes to profile – low-profile and round-profile.

Low profile reels offer an excellent grip and comfort while you are winding and reeling. They’re great for smaller game species, while round profile reels are designed more for heavy game fish.

These reels tend to be gripped from the back, instead of from the side, as is common with low profile reels.

You can use either kind of reel, so the decision is up to you. This choice will depend primarily on what kind of fish you are going after.

Braking System

Last – but absolutely not least – on the list of things to consider when you’re shopping for an anti-backlash reel is the braking system.

It’s crucial that you check braking because without it, you won’t be able to prevent backlash.

There are two key types of braking systems you can invest in – centrifugal brakes and magnetic brakes. Both will help stop your reel when you’re putting pressure on the brake button.

This feature is what really sets anti-backlash reels apart from regular reels. They’ll be just like baitcasting reels except they’ll come with brakes that can be activated with thumb controls.

The best way to prevent a backlash is to invest in the gear that will reduce the likelihood of this unfortunate event occurring.

You need a reel that will hold up to the task – and my picks above are some of the best. However, there are plenty of other options out there, so don’t feel limited in your search.

By following the tips I provided in this buying guide, you’ll be able to find the best anti-backlash reel for your needs, preferences, and budget.
